Saugatuck and Douglas Built Their Holiday Season for the Quiet Months

The Saugatuck Chain Ferry stopped running at Labor Day, and so did The Red Dock on Union Street in Douglas. Both run on a Memorial Day-to-Labor Day schedule. The holiday calendar that takes their place was built to fill exactly those months. Its longest-running event began in 1987 to bring people into town during a slow part of the year. The 2026 production is its 40th.

That calendar runs from a waterfront food festival in the first week of November to a closing performance on December 20. Most of it is organized by local groups, held in local buildings, and raises money that stays in western Allegan County.

A Play Started for the Slow Season, Now in Its 40th Year

Wilcox Newspapers reported that Saugatuck's "A Christmas Carol" started in 1987 as a way to draw more people to the tourist town during a slower time of year. The play has since become a fundraiser. The same Wilcox Newspapers story said the production had been renamed "Saugatuck Christmas Carol supporting Christian Neighbors," with all funds going to the nonprofit, which now oversees the play. Christian Neighbors is based at the Community Church of Douglas, 6874 Wiley Road. It is run entirely by volunteers and provides food, clothing and rental assistance in western Allegan County.

The Saugatuck Douglas Area Convention & Visitors Bureau lists 2026 as the production's 40th year, with eight performances at the Saugatuck Woman's Club from December 11 to 20. The rest of the season follows the same model, and the newer events show it most clearly. The Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl is in its 7th year and sends all of its profits to local families in need.

November Opens on the Water

The first big weekend is a week from Thursday. The Art Coast® Food & Wine Festival runs November 5–7 at Riverside Pavilion, the Singapore Yacht Club venue at 40 Water Street. The weekend includes themed dinners, curated tastings and live entertainment, with chefs and local vintners featuring Southwest Michigan's farm country. Passes are sold through the festival's ticket page.

The CVB's fall guide lists the annual Turkey Trot 5K for Saturday, November 21, five days before Thanksgiving. The next run of events starts the day after the holiday.

Two Tree Lightings on Back-to-Back Nights

Saugatuck and Douglas each light their own tree, one night apart.

Saugatuck goes first, on Friday, November 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wicks Park, 502 Water Street. Douglas follows on Saturday, November 28. Downtown shops are open for Small Business Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Light Night starts at 6 p.m. at Beery Field, 8 Center Street, where Santa greets families and the tree is lit to carols and hot chocolate.

Because the lightings fall on different nights, nobody has to choose between them. The CVB's 2026 holiday guide makes the same point, telling anyone who misses the 27th that Douglas holds its ceremony the next evening. Fennville holds its own Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting the following Friday, December 4, at 6 p.m.

Saturday, November 28, Is the Fullest Day

Most of the Thanksgiving weekend falls on Saturday. Three events share the afternoon, and Light Night starts after all of them have ended:

  1. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Saugatuck Douglas Art Club Holiday Market at the Saugatuck Woman's Club, 303 Butler Street. Admission is free, and members sell their own paintings, photography, ceramics, jewelry and textiles. The CVB's holiday roundup lists the market a day earlier, on November 27, so check the event listing before you go.
  2. Noon to 5 p.m. Small Business Saturday in downtown Douglas.
  3. 1 to 3 p.m. The Saugatuck/Douglas Holiday Cookie Tour. Tickets are $5 per person on Eventbrite, and the CVB is the organizer. The tour is open-house style: visit the decorated inns and lodging stops in any order and pick up a cookie and its recipe at each one. Visitors also vote for the best cookie and the best décor. The participating stops have not been announced yet.
  4. 6 p.m. Light Night at Beery Field.

For coffee between the market and the cookie tour, Uncommon Coffee Roasters' bakery at 302 Culver Street is a few blocks from the Woman's Club. An October 9 food-and-travel feature in American Weekender called it a new location.

The Woman's Club is the building to remember. The market is there on November 28, and A Christmas Carol plays there two weeks later.

December 5 Belongs to Downtown Saugatuck

The second Saturday of the season is packed too, and most of it happens in downtown Saugatuck.

The Saugatuck Whootville Christmas Parade runs downtown from 11 a.m. to noon. Parade participants line up at Mason and Griffith at 10:15 a.m., and the CVB is the sponsor. The CVB encourages spectators to dress in Whootville or Christmas-themed outfits.

The 7th Annual Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl starts at noon at Wicks Park Bar & Grille and runs until 5:30 p.m. Each player gets a card and a mission: find five bars, each with an elf who hands out a task. The crawl ends once all five tasks are done and the card is turned in. Cash prizes go to the ugliest outfits, and all profits support local families in need over the holidays.

Families also have Winterfest at the Felt Estate, 6597 138th Avenue in Holland, from 1 to 3 p.m. It is free and includes Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot cocoa, and dozens of decorated trees inside the mansion. Fennville runs a Holiday Celebration the same day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with reindeer, letters to the North Pole and holiday crafts. Its Christmas Market is also on December 5.

The parade is over before the pub crawl and Winterfest begin, so all three fit in one day.

The Season Ends at 303 Butler Street

A Christmas Carol is the last event on the calendar and the oldest. The 2026 run has eight performances over two weekends, all at the Saugatuck Woman's Club, 303 Butler Street:

Date Curtain
Friday, December 11 8 p.m.
Saturday, December 12 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Sunday, December 13 7 p.m.
Friday, December 18 8 p.m.
Saturday, December 19 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Sunday, December 20 7 p.m.

The Saugatuck Village Players produce the show in support of Christian Neighbors. Tickets are sold through the production's ticket page. The CVB says proceeds benefit Christian Neighbors. Each weekend has one 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, and both Sunday shows start at 7 p.m.

Between the Dates

The weeks between performances have their own December options. The Felt Estate hosts its holiday display all month, with self-guided visits, Candlelight Tours, Tea & Tours, and Coffee & Cocoa Tours. Crane Orchards runs a mile-long drive-through light show Wednesday through Sunday in December. Once snow comes, Landsharks rents snowshoes for the trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park and the Saugatuck Wilds Nature Preserve.
